Spokane International Airport Debuts Future Air Travel Experience for Inland Northwest Region

Completion of Concourse C West Terminal Expansion project marks the halfway point of first phase in Terminal Renovation and Expansion (TREX) Program

SPOKANE, Wash. (May 30, 2024) – A new, modern airport experience is taking off at Spokane International Airport following the debut of the newly completed initial phase of the Concourse C West Terminal Expansion: an addition that adds three new gates, a new addition to the ticketing level with six new ticketing counters and a suite of new passenger-focused amenities onto the existing C Concourse, and marks the latest milestone in the Airport’s multi-year, multi-phase Terminal Renovation and Expansion (TREX) Program.

U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell joined representatives from the Airport and community leaders to commemorate the occasion and highlight the terminal’s significance during a formal unveiling ceremony. Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown, Spokane County Commissioner Al French, along with representatives from Alaska Airlines and the construction manager and contractor joint venture Garco/Q&D Construction also participated in the celebration.

“We’re not just opening a new section of the terminal. We’re creating new economic opportunities for the Spokane community. By 2030, more than 6.2 million passengers are expected to pass through our gates, and this project simultaneously increases our region’s capacity to accommodate this exponential growth while better positioning our team to attract, retain and expand air service that connect Spokane to the global economy,” said Ezra Eckhardt, Spokane Airport Board Chair. “We are incredibly thankful for partners like Senator Cantwell who have been steadfast in their support and advocacy of our terminal expansion program and we are excited for travelers to experience the new space and amenities.”

The newly constructed west expansion is the first successfully completed component of the larger Concourse C Expansion Project, the first phase of the Airport’s TREX Program, and is designed to accommodate the operations of Alaska Airlines and American Airlines. New state-of-the-art features passengers and employees will soon notice include:

  • Expanded accessibility for passengers with disabilities. Specific amenities include in-floor hearing loops at gates, multi-use information displays and companion care rooms with showers and changing stations.
  • Regionally sourced fixtures and finishes, such as Montanan basalt tiles, mother-of-pearl terrazzo floors, and custom-designed mosaics of local landmarks, to inspire a unique sense of place for passengers.
  • A 315-square-foot nursing mother’s room, featuring a spa-like ambience, private suites, and dedicated lounge area.
  • Electrochromic smart windows that leverage green technology and software to manage the daylight, glare and energy use in the terminal – and maximize passenger comfort – throughout the day and night.
  • Expertly designed restrooms, featuring contemporary vanities, larger stalls and outward-swinging doors to increase functionality and accessibility.
  • An open-air plaza, thoughtfully designed to enhance the departure and arrival experience for passengers and airport visitors alike.

The terminal addition also significantly bolsters the regional economy, creating nearly 1,200 new jobs and generating an additional $87 million in household revenue across the region and $313 million in economic activity across Washington state.

The new terminal was designed by Minneapolis-based architecture firm Alliiance Co. and constructed through a joint venture between renowned airport construction firm Q&D Construction and Spokane-based Garco Construction and financed through a variety of sources including nearly $50 million in grants through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Beginning next month, teams will continue work with the Airport to begin the Concourse C East Expansion Project: the next phase of the Concourse C Expansion, which focuses on replacing existing ground boarding gates with new passenger boarding bridges and upgrading the concourse’s existing gates to reflect the terminal’s new look and feel. The full project is expected to be completed in Q4 2025.
