SPOKANE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT RECEIVES MORE THAN $18M IN FEDERAL INFRASTRUCTURE FUNDING

SPOKANE, Wash. (Sept. 12, 2024) – Spokane International Airport, Washington state’s second-largest commercial airport and one of the busiest small-hub airports in the nation, has received more than $18 million in federal grant funding from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as part of the Department of Transportation’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP).

The new funding will be applied towards the design and reconstruction of the Airport’s Taxiway Alpha: the 11,000-foot path commercial and cargo planes use to access the Airport’s primary airside facilities and main runway. Highlights of the project include:

  • Replacing 2,000 lineal feet of asphalt with a more durable concrete surface to help strengthen the structural integrity of the pavement for heavy aircraft use.
  • Replacing incandescent airfield taxiway edge and centerline lights with new LED lights.
  • Installing new LED airfield directional and guidance signage that helps pilots to navigate on the ground during taxi, takeoff and landing.

“We are grateful to Sen. Cantwell and all the legislators who continue to recognize the vital role local airports play in connecting communities and propelling economic progress,” said Ezra Eckhardt, Spokane Airport Board Chair. “The reconstruction of Taxiway Alpha is another facility enhancement we’re making to ensure the Airport is well positioned to meet the demands of our growing market area, and this grant award helps make this possible.” Larry Krauter, Spokane Airports CEO added “Projects like this taxiway rehabilitation serve as a great example of how working to build a better airport is fueling construction related job creation and spending in our community and we are proud to be working with Shamrock Paving, Inc. to deliver this important improvement.”

Construction on the taxiway will be completed in two project phases and is expected to be finalized by Q2 2025. It’s also estimated the project will create more than 300 new jobs.
